Belgium 2024

Well, Belgium is surprisingly lovely (although we might have been lucky with the weather). Our Belgian journey started with bins!

but then we stopped for a break near a panorama. The view in question was of a huge canal lift, which dominated the skyline Strépy-Thieu boat lift – Wikipedia.

I took a photo in the other direction !

Once we got to our campsite we were delighted with the pitch – right by the river Ourthe. Deep enough to canoe along, with Barn swallows, buzzards, herons, ducks and geese flying by.

We stayed on a campsite in Maboge, a little village near the town of La Roche -en- Ardenne, which has a medieval castle.

The town was rebuilt after it was blown to smithereens in the second world war. The Americans had to retreat (the Battle of the Bulge) and didn’t want anything useful to fall into enemy hands. The castle survived though and we enjoyed exploring its many levels. Steve was hitting the target, and we heard the story of Berthe, a medieval noblewoman who was killed by a rival lover. Her ghost haunts the battlements to this day. Légende de Berthe – Château Féodal de La Roche-en-Ardenne – LA ROCHE EN ARDENNE – BELGIQUE (chateaudelaroche.be)
