Travelling South

Otta

Otta is 250km east of the Atlantic coast, about half way from Kristiansund to Oslo. It was a convenient stop, but was actually a beautiful site, and we pitched on the edge of the fast flowing river. We were befriended by children from a young family pitched next to us, from the Netherlands. They helped us with the setting up, and threw the ball for Daisy, which was great.

Oslo

We had chosen a camp site just south of the city, on the beautiful Oslofjord. The site was quite steeply raked, but it meant that we had a fantastic view over the fjord looking from our pitch. We could see the motor boats, sailing yachts, cruise liners and cargo ships sailing up and down between Oslo port and the North Sea. We could also walk down to the beach and have a swim.

We drove into Oslo for a few hours on the Sunday, so it was quite quiet. The opera house on the waterside was impressive.

Göteborg (Gothenburg)

So, finally out of Norway and into Sweden! Suddenly the world felt more European – fields and factories rather than mountains and fjords, motorways rather than bendy single lane roads, and supermarkets that had a choice, and didn’t break the bank going shopping.

The campsite was on a bay, and as the weather continued to be hot I managed to go swimming here too. Our adventurousness only stretched as far as a nature walk by the sea, a meal out in a lovely cafe near the beach, and the next day going to a big park in the city. This was called the Slottsskogen, and had a special dog area (Daisy wanted to be off lead a bit), and also it had a free zoo, with moose (or elk, as they’re called here in Europe).

Coastal walk near Gothenburg

An opportunity for Daisy to have a walk, as well as looking at birdlife and some sculptures (!).

Steampunk style sculptures along a path:

We went into the city to visit the large and beautiful Slottsskogen park. Lots of people enjoying sports, woody areas, cafes, dog running, and a high area in the middle with a free zoo. We saw penguins, seals, elk and even a reindeer.
